Planning your marketing is like planning a vacation... you choose a destination... but if you don't plan what flight to take, where you'll be staying, when you'll be going, who you'll be seeing and how to pay for the trip... you'll never make it to the destination! | "Choosing your destination" is setting your marketing goals (e.g. increase number of clients, revenue, and response rate; build awareness; gain repeat business; retain current clients; cultivate referrals; etc.) The "to whom", "when to", "with what" and "how" parts are determined, defined, outlined and scheduled in your plan.
Without a plan, there is no strategy, no budget, no direction... impulsive marketing decisions tend to be made which "detour" the business from the "destination" and can produce costly mistakes with NO return on investment. Without a plan, marketing becomes inconsistent and confuses the target audience.
A simple marketing plan determines the best approach to reach the target audience(s), outlines the message, details when, how to, and how often to "ping" them and budgets the

investments needed.
Even if the plan is just an outline... it will still help to eliminate haphazard marketing and provide some direction to maintain focus and consistency in marketing.
