TRUTH!
Most sales executives, business owners, marketing directors, etc. will tell you referrals by word-of-mouth are at the top of their list for gaining new clients.

So, this being true, what role does your marketing play?
Well, if you are of the "wait-for-the-referral" mindset, then it will play no role in gaining referrals... BUT if you are one who understands that people are more likely to do something you ASK them to do, then here are a few tips to encourage more referrals and get them more often:
>> Include a "referral graphic" or referral tagline in ALL of your marketing
>> Verbally ask for a referral from clients, strategic alliances, referral sources, etc. ... and BE SPECIFIC about what type of referral you are looking for
>> Develop a specific campaign focused on gaining referrals with an incentive for referring. (See referral marketing example)
