CMYK [see•em•wahy•kay] Acronym:
Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key (Black)
The four inks used in 4-color process
(or "full-color") printing. A CMYK color is expressed as a set of 4 numbers (e.g. 50 25 36 8) defining the quantity of each ink needed.

So that's the definition... but, what does this mean to YOU, ?

It is important for all  marketers using print materials to understand at least the basics of printing. CMYK, AKA four-color process or full-color, is just one element.

A few other tips are:

> 4/1, 4/4 - these are spoken, "four over one" and "four over four". What these mean are the colors per side. (i.e. One side of the print piece is "CMYK" [4-color process] and the other side is either "1-color" [usually black] or "full color". For a 1-side only or "blank back" the reference is 4/0.)

> Price break - this is an easy one... typically the higher the quantity, the lower the per piece cost. You should always ask your printer, "Where are the price breaks?" so you can make an educated purchasing decision.

> Stock - this is the paper. And paper can be tricky. Most papers are referenced by weight and type, some by points. (EX: 110 lb gloss book or 12 pt. C2S).  Understanding paper weight is important so that you are getting the stock you want. If you are unsure, the best option is to get a sample.
