psychographics [sahy•kuh•graf•iks] n.
1. Use of demographics to determine behaviors, interests, attitudes and preferences of a particular target group.
2. Elements of lifestyle.
So that's the definition... but, what does this mean to YOU, ?
EXAMPLE: Demographics of the target are females age 30 - 50 living in North County San Diego making between $50K and $100K annually living in a single-family residence.
While these demographics look for commonality on the OUTSIDE, psychographics go deeper to look at the INSIDE... internal commonality.
QUESTION: Are each and every one of those females going to have the same values? the same beliefs? the same lifestyle? the same spending habits?
ANSWER: Maybe, maybe not.
Understanding how this group behaves or what interests they have will help you to develop a marketing message that this group will relate to and one that will elicit the response you are looking for.
Now the BIG question... how do you find the psychographics of your demographics? And though there are many variables, the short answer is "ask".
